Cherry Blossom Festival
Sendai

wave in rock

What we had never really realized is how much the cherry blossoms mean to the Japanese.
It's the sudden outbreak of spring after a long, cold winter. So let us celebrate!

we were, as you can imagine, totally shocked by the 2010 tsunami that hit Sendai
no further empty words

This was in Sendai town. People gathered on Friday evening, bringing drinks and eats, settling in for the week-end or at least one night under the blossoms in the park. Tell the truth, there were hardly any flowers out yet, and we didn't even care to stay until darkness - much too cold. But we did feel sorry for ourselves, missing out on the fun.
And it didn't stop them from spreading out their tarps with cardboard on top, all set for a cozy evening and night. Sure looked like they were getting theirs. Even when the lanterns won out over the flowers by a wide margin.

Checking the page after so many years, it occurred to me: No blasted ghetto blasters! No blaring speakers! Just agreeable quietness.
Oh, what a fine country.
