The Belgian Cowboy


Lucky Luke started out on his career in the stables of Dupuis (den Haag, Bruxelles). The first two books were of a later date than the third; obviously, Lucky was such a hit that a market was created for preceding efforts which had remained unpublished before; their panel numbers were repeated in the first published book. All in all, Dupuis published 30 titles.

Somewhat after 1970 Dargaud (Bruxelles) took over and started numbering anew from no. 1. As far as I know, they published 29 albums. The name Dargaud also appears on books published by Amsterdam Boek.
Finally, I have 1 album that was published by Lucky Productions, Geneva. Checking recently, it looks like the strip must have gone on beyond that; I'll try to update.
One problem is that all publishers had a habit of copyrighting anew for every reprint (not such a bad idea either) which makes it hard to find out exactly when a title first appeared. A further complication is that the panels have been numbered in an order different from the strip album numbers.
Without going too far, a joke is a joke, I collected all info on dates I could find. I translated the titles and checked the English-language editions I could find. Morris, however, especially for a speaker of French, had a very English turn of mind and I should be reasonably close.
Somebody take it from here! Please?



As you can see below, Morris was not above recycling his "The End" titles. I had a lot of fun finding similarities and will not deprive you of that pleasure, if you are so inclined. I only mention the very last frame (L01 - Spokenjacht) which contains a mistake ("a long ways from home"); but the same one had been used already in (DA27 Nytroglycerine) - where it had been corrected; and pretty sloppily obvious, too.
Some of the thumbnails give access to a larger version; mainly those with an irregular format or combinations of several stories in one album.

1953: I am pretty sure of that date as that was when George Stevens's Shane, with among others Jack Palance, was released in the U.S.A. At that time, it easily took over 6 months for the European release to follow. (back)
